Picture this. You stand before Masjid Mujahidin a testament to community effort. Its cream-coloured walls gleam under the Singapore sun. A circular glass-panelled prayer hall captivates the eye. Unique it is. No dome tops this mosque. Instead a cuboid shape with semi-oval openings graces its roof.
Masjid Mujahidin isn’t just a mosque. It’s a story of dedication. It’s the second satellite mosque built under the Mosque Building Fund. Opened in October 1977 it serves a large community. It holds a special place in Queenstown’s history. Before its existence religious classes were held in a less-than-ideal location. A Police Reserve Unit served as a temporary prayer space. This was because the existing smaller prayer halls couldn’t accommodate everyone.
Eleven years of hard work paved the way for this mosque. The Muslim community in Queenstown collaborated with MUIS. They organised island-wide fundraising. Food bazaars in nearby housing estates also helped raise money. The mosque wasn’t merely constructed. It was built with a vision. Upon opening in 1977 it housed specialised departments. Education youth religion and welfare all found a home within Masjid Mujahidin’s walls.
An annexe followed later. It provided administrative offices boardrooms classrooms and more. A computer room even showed the mosque’s progressive outlook. A rear wing with additional classrooms was added in 1994 further expanding its capacity.
Demand for space continued to grow. The mosque underwent an upgrade in 2013. This upgrade introduced new spaces. Barrier-free facilities ensured accessibility. The upgraded mosque was opened in 2014. Now it also houses an office for the Kampong Holland Mosque Committee. This expands the mosque’s reach and services to even more people.
Masjid Mujahidin stands as a beacon of faith. Its history is a testament to community spirit and perseverance. It serves as a centre for learning and worship. It continues to evolve to meet the needs of the community it serves. Its unique design and rich history make it a special landmark in Singapore.
