Lost in the vibrant district of Tambora stands Al-Mansur Mosque. It is one of Jakarta’s oldest mosques. This mosque is not just a place of worship. It is a testament to Jakarta’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The story of Al-Mansur Mosque begins in 1717. Raden Abdul Malik, also known as Prince Cakrajaya Adiningrat, founded it. His vision was to create a space for worship. He also wanted a center for community education against invaders. Originally named Jami Kampung Sawah, the mosque played a crucial role. It was important in Indonesia’s struggle for independence. This was under the leadership of KH. Mohammad Mansyur.

KH. Mohammad Mansyur was a Betawi figure. He was known as Guru Mansur. He bravely fought against Dutch colonial rule. His spirit of resistance became intertwined with the mosque. During 1947-1948, a fierce gunfight erupted. Nationalist forces clashed with NICA soldiers. Mansur tried to raise a Red-and-White flag on the minarets. The minarets now appear obsolete.

After Mohammad Mansyur’s death on May 12, 1967, the mosque was renamed Masjid Jami al-Mansyur. This renaming honored his contributions. The government recognized its cultural value. It was listed as a cultural heritage object in 1972.

As you approach Al-Mansur Mosque, you will notice its unique architecture. The main hall is the oldest part of the mosque. It measures 12 by 14.40 meters. Four solid pillars stand prominently in the middle of the hall. The pillars have an octagonal base. Above this, there’s a buffer, bell pellet and flat. The central stem is round and decorated with seams. The top section is rectangular and has a seam.

Wooden beams connect the pillars at half height. These beams support two stairs leading to the attic. Fences with rhomboid patterns adorn the beams. These fences stand 80 centimeters high. The roof of the mosque overlaps in the form of limasan. This adds to the mosque’s distinct character.

A cylindrical tower stands in front of the old mosque. It reaches a height of 12 meters. The tower has terraces with iron fences on its fourth and fifth levels. A semicircular dome tops the minaret.

Al-Mansur Mosque is more than just a building. It embodies the spirit of resistance. It also represents community and cultural heritage. It is a reminder of the struggles and triumphs. These events shaped Jakarta’s identity. As you leave this historic mosque, reflect on its legacy. Remember the brave individuals. They fought for independence and preserved their cultural identity. Their spirit lives on within the walls of Al-Mansur Mosque.
