Imagine Pangeran Jayakarta, a warrior prince. He stood defiant against the Dutch in 1619. The story of Masjid Jayakarta begins with him.

Masjid Jayakarta is not just a building. It is a symbol of resistance and faith. It stands in Jatinegara, East Jakarta.

Pangeran Jayakarta faced Jaan Pieter Zoon Coen’s troops. He was outmaneuvered in Mangga Dua, Central Jakarta. The prince was surrounded. He threw his cloak into an old well as a trick. The Dutch thought he was dead. They sealed the well.

Pangeran Jayakarta escaped to the forests of Jatinegara. There, across the Sunter River, he built a mosque in 1620. Masjid Jayakarta became a rallying point. It gathered fighters and scholars. They continued the struggle against the Dutch. They spread Islam in Sunda Kelapa.

The mosque was renovated several times. Pangeran Sugeri, son of Sultan Fatah of Banten, renovated it first in 1700. He joined Pangeran Jayakarta. They opposed Sultan Haji, who was appointed by the Dutch.

The local government now protects Masjid Jayakarta. This includes the tomb of Pangeran Jayakarta. He is buried next to the mosque. His children, grandchildren, and Pangeran Sugeri are also there. The cemetery behind the mosque is for his descendants only.

Masjid Jayakarta once held sacred objects. A rosary with VOC coins and a gobang were among them. The gobang was used to signal danger. Sadly, these treasures are now lost.

Four original pillars still stand inside the Masjid Jayakarta. They support the upper tower. These pillars are made of genuine teak wood. The tower has unique carvings. These carvings are Arabic letters shaped like a beehive. Both features have been preserved.

Masjid Jami Assalafiyah is another name for this historic mosque. It reflects its role in preserving ancient traditions. The name honors its roots as a center of Islamic learning.

The story of Masjid Jayakarta is a testament to resilience. It is a beacon of faith. It stands as a reminder of Jakarta’s fight for freedom. It shows the enduring legacy of Pangeran Jayakarta. The Masjid Jayakarta still functions as a place of worship. It serves as a cultural heritage site.
