Didn’t you know that Istiqlal Mosque is more than just a place of worship. It is a symbol of Indonesia’s independence and religious harmony. The Istiqlal Mosque stands proudly in Jakarta. Its name means “Independence” in Arabic. This reflects its role as a national monument.

The idea for Istiqlal Mosque arose after Indonesia gained independence in 1945. Wahid Hasyim and Anwar Cokroaminoto championed the project. President Sukarno embraced the vision. He supervised the mosque’s construction. Friedrich Silaban won the design competition. He was the son of a Lutheran pastor.

Sukarno chose the location carefully. He wanted it near Merdeka Square. This mirrored Javanese tradition. Royal palaces and grand mosques stood by the main square. Sukarno also placed it near Jakarta Cathedral and Immanuel Church. This symbolized religious tolerance.

Construction began in 1961. It took 17 years to complete the Istiqlal Mosque. President Suharto opened it in 1978. Istiqlal Mosque is Southeast Asia’s largest mosque. It can hold over 120000 people.

Istiqlal Mosque has faced challenges. In 1978 a bomb exploded. Another attack occurred in 1999. Despite these events Istiqlal Mosque remains a strong symbol.

Between 2019 and 2020 Istiqlal Mosque underwent major renovations. These upgrades cost US$35 million. The work included polishing marble and upgrading systems. A tunnel now connects Istiqlal Mosque to St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral. It is called the “Terowongan Silaturahmi” or Tunnel of Friendship.

In 2024 Pope Francis visited Istiqlal Mosque. He called it proof of religious moderation in Indonesia. He signed the Istiqlal Declaration with the Grand Imam.

Istiqlal Mosque has seven entrances. Each gate is named after one of the 99 Names of Allah. The number seven represents the Seven Heavens. Ablution fountains are on the ground floor. The prayer hall and courtyard are on the first floor.

The main prayer hall has a 45-meter dome. The number “45” symbolizes 1945. This marks the year of Indonesian Independence. Twelve columns support the dome. They represent the Prophet Muhammad’s birth date.

The main floor and balconies create five levels. The number “5” represents the Five Pillars of Islam. The interior design is minimalist. It features stainless steel ornaments.

The Istiqlal Mosque’s minaret is 66.66 meters tall. This symbolizes the verses in the Quran. A stainless steel pinnacle tops the minaret. It represents the 30 juz’ of the Quran.

Istiqlal Mosque can hold over 200000 people. The main prayer room holds 61000. Corridors and other spaces accommodate 81000.

During Christian celebrations Istiqlal Mosque provides parking for worshippers. The mosque uses a central sound system. It also has plasma TVs for information.

Istiqlal Mosque sits on the former Wilhelmina Park. The garden has old trees. A river branch flows through the complex. A fountain spouts water 45 meters high.

Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar has made Istiqlal Mosque environmentally friendly. Solar panels and a water recycling system are installed. The World Bank recognized Istiqlal Mosque as a green place of worship.

Many dignitaries have visited Istiqlal Mosque. These include Barack Obama and King Salman of Saudi Arabia. Istiqlal Mosque stands as a testament to Indonesia’s history. It embodies independence religious harmony and sustainable practices.
