Nestled in the heart of Jakarta, Masjid Jami’atun Nur stands as a testament to the city’s rich and diverse history. Masjid Jami’atun Nur, also known as Angke Mosque, rests quietly in the Tambora district. This mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living story, a blend of cultures woven into its very foundation. Masjid Jami’atun Nur dates back to April 2, 1761. Its story begins with a fascinating mix of individuals. Nyonya Tan, originally named Oey, and Syaikh Liong Tan, both Chinese converts to Islam, played key roles in the mosque’s creation. Nyonya Tan was the benefactor, providing the means, and Syaikh Liong Tan oversaw the construction. The location of Masjid Jami’atun Nur adds another layer to its story. Situated near a canal once known as Angke, meaning “blood” and “carcass” in Hokkien, the area was once home to a slaughterhouse. This historical detail paints a vivid picture of the mosque’s surroundings in its early days. The name Angke, while referencing a less-than-pleasant past, has become synonymous with the mosque and the surrounding community. Masjid Jami’atun Nur’s unique architecture reflects the diverse influences of the region. The tiered roof is a nod to traditional Javanese mosque design. Balinese influences are evident in the window shutters and the upward curve of the roof tips, resembling the Balinese punggel. Chinese artistry is seen in the roof’s bracketing and the lotus decorations, symbols of enlightenment. Even Dutch colonial touches grace the main door and window ornamentation. This blend of styles creates a harmonious whole, a visual representation of Jakarta’s multicultural heritage. Masjid Jami’atun Nur stands as a quiet symbol of resilience. It has undergone several restorations, most recently in 2016, ensuring its continued presence in the vibrant tapestry of Jakarta.
