Blood and carcasses. That is what the nearby canal was once known for. Yet here stands a testament to faith and cultural fusion Masjid Jami Taufiqurahman. Today we explore Masjid Jami Taufiqurahman. It is a place where diverse influences converge.

Masjid Jami Taufiqurahman reflects Jakarta’s multiethnic origins. The mosque stands as one of Jakarta’s oldest. Historian Denys Lombard praised it. He called it one of the most elegant in the old town.

Founded on April 2 1761 the mosque has a unique history. Both its benefactors Nyonya Tan and building contractor Syaikh Liong Tan were Muslim converts. They hailed from Batavia’s local Chinese community.

The mosque’s location near the Angke canal gives it a distinctive name. Angke means blood and carcass in Hokkien. This refers to the area’s past as a slaughterhouse. Prince Syarif Hamid a Sultan from Pontianak was buried in front of the mosque in 1858. People from Pontianak often visit his grave. Many Chinese in this area are devout Muslims.

The architecture of Masjid Jami Taufiqurahman is a blend of styles. It incorporates Javanese Balinese Chinese and Dutch elements. The tiered roof reflects traditional Javanese mosque design. Balinese influence appears in the window shutters. The roof’s tips curve upwards in Balinese style. Chinese norms are evident in the roof’s bracketing construction. Some decorative elements feature a Chinese lotus symbol. Dutch colonial influences are visible in the main door and window ornamentation.

Measuring only 15 x 15 meters Masjid Jami Taufiqurahman sits on a 400 sqm land. Despite its small size it holds significant cultural value. The mosque complex includes a cemetery. Many tombstones bear Chinese and Arabic inscriptions. The oldest tombstones reveal Islamic Banten and Aceh origins.

Restored several times Masjid Jami Taufiqurahman remains largely unaltered since its construction. Restorations occurred in 1970 1985–1987 and 2016. It stands as a protected cultural heritage site. Masjid Jami Taufiqurahman is the only mosque in Jakarta that has remained unaltered since it was built.

Masjid Jami Taufiqurahman represents Jakarta’s layered history. It embodies a fusion of cultures and faiths. As we conclude our visit remember the harmonious blend of Balinese Javanese Chinese and Dutch influences.
