“Lost your prayer rug? Don’t worry, at Masjid Jami Nurul Mu’min, there’s probably enough space to share!” This joke might sound strange, but it hints at the impressive size of this mosque. Masjid Jami Nurul Mu’min is no ordinary place of worship. It’s a symbol of resilience and community spirit, nestled within the bustling heart of Jakarta. The story of Masjid Jami Nurul Mu’min begins not with grand designs, but with a tragedy. In the wake of a devastating fire that ravaged the PD Pasar Jaya market in Blok M in 2006, the community found themselves without a proper place to pray. A temporary shelter was erected, a mere placeholder for the spiritual heart they yearned to rebuild. After negotiations with the building developers, a plan emerged: to construct a grand mosque atop the new Blok M Square mall. The journey wasn’t easy. The developers initially hesitated to allocate sufficient space for a larger mosque. The mosque pengurus persevered, negotiating and advocating for their community’s needs. The turning point came when they appealed directly to the then-Governor of Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo. He intervened, and the dream of a prominent mosque above the bustling mall began to take shape. Construction was a gradual process, completed in 2009. Masjid Jami Nurul Mu’min initially had basic facilities. Over time, it evolved. The ornate ceiling, the plush carpets, and other embellishments were added gradually, a testament to the ongoing commitment of the community. The mosque’s capacity expanded to accommodate the growing congregation. It evolved from a simple prayer space to a vibrant hub for religious learning and community gatherings. It can hold an astounding 14,000 worshippers, especially during large gatherings and popular Saturday lectures by figures like Ustaz Khalid Basalamah. This growth led to an expansion in 2016, utilizing part of the parking area. It’s a place where modernity and spirituality intertwine, a beacon of faith rising above the commercial heart of Blok M.
