Once just a humble langgar or small prayer house. Now Masjid Jami Nurul Akbar stands as a testament to faith and community in Jakarta. Are you ready to uncover its story?
Masjid Jami Nurul Akbar wasn’t always the grand structure we see today. Its story begins with Guru Jaisan. His langgar served not only as a place of prayer but also as a center for education. Children and adults alike gathered here. This was a place to learn and grow during Indonesia’s pre-independence era. It even served as a base for local defense.
In 1952 the langgar was officially designated a mosque. The land it stood on measuring 400 square meters was a waqf or a religious endowment. The name Masjid Jami Nurul Falah was bestowed upon it in the 1960s by Ustaz Achmad Nairan.
Time brought changes. The mosque underwent its first major renovation in 1971. A more extensive renovation took place in 1984. This is when the foundations for the modern Masjid Jami Nurul Akbar were laid. Two local architects Both Soedargo and Taufik were entrusted with the task. They were tasked with creating a modern mosque design.
The renovation took two years. On December 13 1986 Minister of State Secretary Sudharmono inaugurated the new Masjid Jami Nurul Akbar.
Today Masjid Jami Nurul Akbar continues to grow. An expansion project is underway on the north side of the main building. This new two-story structure will accommodate around 300 additional worshipers. The community welcomes contributions to support this expansion.
