Amidst the bustling energy of Jakarta, a beacon of history and faith stands tall: Masjid Jami’ Muyassarin. This mosque, nestled in the heart of Kebayoran Lama, has witnessed centuries of change, its walls echoing with tales of devotion and resilience. Masjid Jami’ Muyassarin isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the rich cultural tapestry of Jakarta. The mosque traces its roots back to the late 18th century, a time when Kebayoran was a hub of activity. Originally a humble musalla with a traditional limas roof, Masjid Jami’ Muyassarin underwent a series of transformations. It was renovated in 1850, 1948, 1960, and 1994. Each renovation added a new layer to its story, blending architectural styles and reflecting the evolving needs of the community. Look up and you’ll see a striking golden arrow adorning the minaret. This unique symbol, added in 1960, holds a deeper meaning. According to KH. Atok Illah, a respected elder of the mosque, the arrow represents the Prophet Muhammad’s use of arrows in battle. It also connects to the mosque’s history as a gathering place for local jawara, or champions, during the colonial era. These jawara would train at Masjid Jami’ Muyassarin under the leadership of H. Marjuk, preparing to resist Dutch colonial rule. They honed their Beksi fighting skills and even practiced Rawa Rontek, a mystical art combining Islamic teachings and Betawi incantations. But Masjid Jami’ Muyassarin wasn’t just a training ground for warriors. It was also a center of Islamic learning, led by KH. Jabir bin Syeh Zakaria, KH. Atok Illah’s grandfather. Here, the jawara studied religious texts, deepening their faith alongside their martial prowess. Today, Masjid Jami’ Muyassarin continues to serve as a meeting point for Beksi masters. They gather here to discuss and practice their art, keeping the tradition alive. As you stand before this historic mosque, take a moment to appreciate the stories etched within its walls. Masjid Jami’ Muyassarin is more than just a building. It is a symbol of resilience, a testament to the enduring power of faith, and a vibrant thread in the rich tapestry of Jakarta’s history.
