“Ruislag” a word you might not know. It means swapping land. This is how Masjid Jami Darulsalamah came to be.
Masjid Jami Darulsalamah stands here in Jakarta. It is more than just a building. It is a story of community spirit and architectural vision.
Once upon a time the Masjid Jami Darussalamah was located 50 meters behind Plaza UOB on Jalan Kotabumi. The land it stood on was designated for a development project. The mosque was essentially trapped.
To solve this problem a land swap occurred. The mosque was moved to a new location. The new space was larger 819 square meters compared to the original 492 square meters. This exchange ensured the mosque’s survival. It also provided a better space for its community.
The design of Masjid Jami Darulsalamah is unique. Ridwan Kamil a famous architect designed it. He later became the mayor of Bandung. His design was initially controversial. It featured a triangular shape. Some members of the mosque committee were hesitant. They were unfamiliar with such a modern design.
Ridwan Kamil explained the philosophy behind the triangle. He pointed out that traditional Indonesian houses often have triangular roofs. This design would connect the mosque to the local architectural identity. Eventually the committee agreed. They recognized Ridwan Kamil’s talent. They saw how his design honored Indonesian heritage.
Masjid Jami Darulsalamah officially opened on June 25 2015. This was during Ramadan 1936 Hijriyah. In the beginning many people visited the mosque. They came from Bandung and other regions. They had seen Ridwan Kamil’s posts on social media. They wanted to see his unique creation.
Over time the initial excitement faded. Fewer people traveled to see the mosque. The local community however continued to use it. Office workers nearby became regular attendees.
Hadi Joko Susanto is the Secretary of Masjid Jami Darulsalamah. He shared the story of its creation. He explained the challenges and the eventual triumph of its unique design.
The roof’s design was also debated. Originally it was designed without glass. Fresh air could flow freely into the mosque. But the committee worried about rain. They feared the carpets and interior would be damaged. Glass was added and air conditioning installed. This made the mosque more comfortable.
Masjid Jami Darulsalamah stands as a testament to architectural innovation. It shows the power of community collaboration. Its story is a reminder of Jakarta’s dynamic blend of tradition and modernity. The unique design of Masjid Jami Darulsalamah invites you to appreciate the blend of tradition and modernity.
