Lost in translation, perhaps, the Masjid Jami Baiturohim whispers tales of faith. This Jakarta mosque stands as a testament to history. It blends cultural influences and enduring devotion.

Masjid Jami Baiturohim is more than just a place of worship. It’s a cultural landmark. Its story echoes through the ages. The mosque provides a serene escape from Jakarta’s bustling streets.

Imagine the Muslim merchants from India. They once traversed the seas to Batavia. These traders built mosques to practice their faith. The Jami Kampung Baru Mosque arose from this need. Its construction began in 1743 and was completed in 1748. Sheikh Abubakar was one of the merchants. He resided in the area and initiated this sacred project.

Initially, the mosque was called the New Kampong mosque. Some even referred to it as the Moorsche Tempel. This name reflects its Moorish origins. The term Moorish identified Indian Muslims in that era.

Over time, the Masjid Jami Baiturohim evolved. Renovations and restorations have shaped its architecture. Today, only remnants of the original structure remain. These include the keranka central square. You can also see the carved setandan grapes. Some pillars on the windows have survived.

In the late 1980s, progress threatened the mosque. The construction of a flyover damaged the mosque. Despite these challenges, the mosque endures.

The basic plan is square. It features a pyramid-shaped roof. This design resembles traditional Javanese architecture. Four soko guru pillars support the roof.

Inside, the mosque spans about 1,050 square meters. The floor is covered with white tiles. Green mats and red carpets add color. An antique lamp hangs from the ceiling. It has been there since the mosque was built.

Once, the mosque boasted a beautiful pulpit made of carved wood. This pulpit is now stored in the Jakarta History Museum. Though replaced, its memory lives on.

The Masjid Jami Baiturohim stands as a symbol of resilience. It embodies the spirit of Jakarta’s Muslim community. It connects the past with the present. It is a place where history, culture, and faith intertwine.

So, remember the Masjid Jami Baiturohim. It is not just bricks and mortar. It is a story etched in time. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith.
