Initially constructed of wood Masjid Jami’ Baitur Rahman was a simple structure. The humid Jakarta climate however took its toll. The wooden building weathered and decayed. The mosque needed a stronger more lasting form. In 1922 under the Dutch East Indies government it was rebuilt. This time using bricks and cement. The Dutch government employed European architectural styles for the new mosque. Noticeably this sturdy structure however lacked iron or bone bracing.
Then came 1983 and a devastating earthquake. This powerful earthquake damaged the mosque’s dome. The dome was removed and replaced with a simpler roof. A major renovation followed ten years later. Only the front section of the mosque remained unchanged after this work. Sixty percent of the structure was renovated. That original front section still stands as a powerful symbol of endurance.
The year 2004 brought an even greater challenge. A massive earthquake and a monstrous tsunami. The tsunami engulfed the area. Buildings were shattered and washed away. Yet Masjid Jami’ Baitur Rahman stood. A beacon of hope amidst devastation. Its brick structure damaged but not destroyed. Only about twenty percent of the brickwork was affected. The people of Jakarta saw this survival as a symbol of divine protection.
