Built in 1993 Masjid Jami Baitul Huda stands proudly in East Jakarta. This two-story mosque is a testament to the strong Islamic faith of the Kramat Jati community. Located on Jalan Masjid Bendungan it’s easily spotted near a small river and a neighborhood gate.
The mosque’s construction is a fascinating story in itself. Built on a relatively small 540 square meter plot of wakaf land almost the entire space is occupied by the mosque itself. This leaves little room for car parking so visitors are encouraged to arrive on two-wheeled vehicles. The structure is modern with a striking green dome topping the building. The main prayer hall is on the ground floor. A mezzanine level provides additional space during peak prayer times.
Inside Masjid Jami Baitul Huda beautiful calligraphy adorns every corner. The mosque’s modern design blends seamlessly with traditional Islamic aesthetics. Interestingly the area’s name Kramat Jati has an intriguing past. It began as Kampung Kramat a village named after animistic beliefs. Later a market surrounded by teak trees led to its current name. Though animism faded with the spread of Islam the name remains a unique link to the past. The strong Islamic faith in Kramat Jati is evident. There are no other houses of worship in this district. The deep devotion is also reflected in the lack of musical events. It is believed that holding such events could bring misfortune to the entire area. This is a testament to the community’s unique cultural identity.
