Habib Kuncung’s story is fascinating. He was born in Ghurfah Tarim Hadramaut on November 14 1838. He traveled widely. He went to places like the Netherlands Malaysia and Singapore. He studied under many leading Islamic scholars in Indonesia. His nickname Kuncung comes from a distinctive conical hat he wore. It was a gift from Bugis royalty. Habib Kuncung is believed to have possessed extraordinary abilities. He was known as an ahli darkah a person who appeared when needed. He was said to be able to transcend space and time.
He passed away in 1926 at the age of 93. His tomb remains a focal point. People from all over come to pay their respects. Many believe in his continued spiritual presence. A water jug near his grave is said to have special properties. It is frequently used by pilgrims.
