“A resting place for family.” That’s how Masjid Jami At Taqwa in Jakarta became known to some. The story unfolds in February 2022. Sandiaga Uno, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, faced a time of grief. His father-in-law, Abdul Aziz Marzuki, had passed away. Marzuki’s final resting place? The serene grounds of Masjid Jami At Taqwa. It wasn’t a sudden decision. Marzuki had long expressed his wish to be buried at this mosque. He held a deep connection to Masjid Jami At Taqwa, having served as a caretaker and chairman of its foundation. His family history intertwined with the mosque’s, with his mother, siblings, and other relatives already laid to rest in its grounds. Masjid Jami At Taqwa’s story began much earlier, in 1920. Built on land donated by H. Yusuf bin Gede Ali, the mosque originally stood on a smaller plot. Over the years, it has undergone several expansions, reflecting the growing community it serves. The mosque’s growth is also linked to Marzuki’s own efforts. His contributions helped to expand the building and its grounds to their present size. Interestingly, due to its proximity to the Senayan area, it’s often referred to as Masjid Senayan. The mosque’s current form arose from a reconstruction in 1952. Then, in 1989, another major expansion began, marked by a foundation stone laying ceremony attended by prominent figures like KH Masykur and KH M Natsir. The new Masjid Jami At Taqwa was officially inaugurated in 1992 by then-Vice President Soedharmono. Today, the mosque stands as a testament to community spirit and the dedication of individuals like Abdul Aziz Marzuki. Masjid Jami At Taqwa isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a repository of memories, a testament to family ties, and a vibrant hub for the community.
