Did Masjid Jami Assalam always stand as a beacon of peace? No. Masjid Jami Assalam, also known as Masjid Pangeran Jayakarta, whispers tales of resilience and resistance. It stands as a testament to Prince Jayakarta’s struggle against Dutch colonial rule. Masjid Jami Assalam’s story begins not in tranquility, but amidst the chaos of the 1619 battle in Mangga Dua. Outnumbered and facing defeat, Prince Jayakarta employed a clever ruse. He cast his robes and turban into a well, leading the Dutch to believe he had perished. Under the cover of this deception, he escaped eastward, eventually finding refuge in a dense teak forest. This forest, known as Jatinegara, became the birthplace of Masjid Jami Assalam in 1620. More than a place of worship, it served as a strategic hub. Here, Prince Jayakarta rallied warriors and scholars, not just to spread Islam, but to resist colonial forces. The very pillars of Masjid Jami Assalam echo this history. They stand as silent witnesses to the prince’s struggle. The mosque wasn’t just built for prayer. It was built to inspire resistance. His son, Prince Senapati, continued this legacy, venturing further afield to Cibarusah to both disseminate Islamic teachings and evade Dutch pursuit. Prince Jayakarta, having laid the foundation for resistance, was laid to rest beside his mosque in 1640. His tomb, a place of reverence, stands as a reminder of his indomitable spirit. Over the centuries, Masjid Jami Assalam has undergone renovations. Yet, its core remains untouched. The original teak pillars, the “Saka Guru,” still stand strong, supporting the weight of history and faith. They are a tangible link to the mosque’s origins. Today, Masjid Jami Assalam, a designated cultural heritage site since 1993, offers a space for reflection. It serves not only as a place of prayer but as a reminder of the enduring power of resistance. The echoes of Prince Jayakarta’s struggle continue to resonate within its walls, reminding us of the spirit that birthed this sanctuary.
