Is it merely a building, or is it a testament to Jakarta’s resilience? This is the Masjid Jami’ Assalafiyah. It stands as a living monument to Pangeran Jayakarta’s struggle against colonial forces.

Masjid Jami’ Assalafiyah is more than just a place of worship. It is a symbol of resistance and faith. Its story is woven into the very fabric of Jakarta. The mosque was founded in 1620 by Pangeran Jayakarta himself.

Let’s step back in time to 1619. Pangeran Jayakarta fought bravely against the VOC, led by Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Despite his courage, his forces were defeated. The VOC destroyed Jayakarta including the grand Masjid Kesultanan.

But Pangeran Jayakarta did not perish. He cleverly deceived the Dutch. He threw his robe into a well. The Dutch thought they had killed him. Instead, he fled east.

He escaped to the area now known as Jatinegara Kaum. There, he established a new settlement. In 1620, he founded the Masjid Jami’ Assalafiyah. It was a place for prayer and a base for planning resistance.

The name Assalafiyah carries deep meaning. It refers to the “righteous predecessors” in Islam. These are the first three generations of Muslims. They serve as exemplary figures.

The Masjid Jami’ Assalafiyah became a sanctuary. It was a place to rally support against the Dutch. Pangeran Jayakarta’s son, Pangeran Senapati, continued the struggle. He spread Islam further afield.

Pangeran Jayakarta passed away in 1640. He was buried near the mosque he built. His legacy lives on.

Over the centuries, the Masjid Jami’ Assalafiyah has been renovated. Yet, some original features remain. The four front pillars stand as testaments to its early construction.

Since 1993, the Masjid Jami’ Assalafiyah has been designated a cultural heritage site. This recognition protects its historical significance. Today, the mosque covers 7000 square meters. It can accommodate 800 worshippers.

The Masjid Jami’ Assalafiyah also holds treasured heirlooms. There was once a tasbih featuring VOC coins and a gobang. These relics served as reminders of the past. They signaled danger. Sadly, these items have been lost.

The mosque’s minaret is unique. It has Arabic script carvings shaped like honeycombs. These details are carefully preserved.

Masjid Jami’ Assalafiyah is a reminder of Jakarta’s past. It stands as a testament to faith and freedom. It connects us to the spirit of Pangeran Jayakarta. This mosque is a vital part of Jakarta’s story.
