Masjid Jami Assa’ Adah stands as a testament to Pangeran Jayakarta’s enduring legacy. He started its construction in 1620. This was after the Dutch East India Company, under Jan Pieterszoon Coen, destroyed his stronghold in Jayakarta. Pangeran Jayakarta, refusing defeat, retreated eastward. He established a new community and built this mosque. It served not only as a place of worship, but also as a strategic hub. From here, he planned his resistance against the Dutch. The mosque’s name, Assalafiyah, meaning “followers of the righteous predecessors”, speaks to his commitment to Islamic principles. The mosque grounds also hold the tomb of Pangeran Jayakarta, his family, and his son. Masjid Jami Assa’ Adah has undergone renovations and expansions. Yet, key elements like the four original pillars remain, connecting the present to the past. In 1993, Masjid Jami Assa’ Adah was designated a cultural heritage site, solidifying its importance in Indonesian history.
