“Did you know that Masjid Jami’ As Shohaabah has a fascinating history?” I ask my captivated audience. We stand before the mosque its walls basking in the Jakarta sun.

Masjid Jami’ As Shohaabah is not just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to Jakarta’s rich cultural heritage. This mosque holds a special place in the hearts of many Jakartans. Its history stretches back centuries a true anchor in the city’s ever-changing landscape.

The mosque wasn’t always as it is today. Imagine the bustling port of Batavia. Merchants from Arabia and India arrived. They needed a place to pray. So they built. One such merchant Sheikh Abubakar led the construction. It started in 1743 and was finished in 1748. The building materials were simple. The design humble. Yet it served its purpose.

The original structure is not fully intact. Unfortunately some parts were lost during modernization efforts in the late 1980s. A flyover project led to the demolition of older buildings. Sadly Masjid Jami’ As Shohaabah wasn’t spared. Parts of the mosque were lost. The old buildings were unfortunately not prioritized despite their historical importance. However the central square carved setandan grapes and some pillars remain. These features offer a glimpse into the mosque’s original beauty.

The mosque’s layout is unique. It’s square with an overlapping roof a pyramid shape on top. This design shows similarities to traditional Javanese architecture. Four pillars support the central roof. The mosque’s area is about 1050 square meters. The floor boasts white tiles covered in green and red mats. An antique lamp hangs in the ceiling. This lamp is a survivor from the mosque’s earliest days. It’s a beautiful reminder of the mosque’s enduring spirit.

The original pulpit was incredibly ornate. It was made of carved wood. Sadly it was replaced. Fortunately the original pulpit found a new home. It’s now preserved in the Jakarta History Museum. A visit there will allow you to appreciate its exquisite craftsmanship.

Masjid Jami’ As Shohaabah stands as a symbol of resilience. It has faced challenges. It has adapted. It continues to serve as a spiritual and cultural center. It is a crucial part of Jakarta’s identity. It connects us to the city’s past and its people’s faith. So take a moment to reflect on the stories within these walls. They whisper tales of trade faith and community. They remind us of the enduring power of shared belief. Masjid Jami’ As Shohaabah is more than just a mosque it’s a legacy.
