“A triangle for a mosque?” a child’s voice piped up, echoing the initial surprise many felt upon seeing Masjid Jami Ar Ridwan, also known as Masjid Jami’e Darussalam. This unique mosque, nestled in the heart of Kebon Melati, Central Jakarta, near the towering UOB Plaza, breaks the mold of traditional domed architecture. Its distinctive triangular roof, designed by the renowned architect Ridwan Kamil, initially sparked confusion and even rejection from the local community. They questioned its resemblance to a church rather than a mosque. But like a seed of faith taking root in unfamiliar soil, Masjid Jami Ar Ridwan eventually blossomed into a beloved community hub. Ridwan Kamil, affectionately known as Kang Emil, along with mosque administrators, patiently explained the design. The triangular roof was not a rejection of tradition, but a practical consideration for Jakarta’s tropical climate. The mosque’s journey began on Jalan Kotabumi, a mere 50 meters behind UOB Plaza. However, encroaching development threatened its existence. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the mosque was relocated to a larger plot on Jalan Kota Bumi Ujung. This “rolling exchange,” transferring the mosque from one waqf area to another, ensured its survival and growth. The main prayer hall, situated beneath the distinctive triangular roof, features a pulpit and walls adorned with beautiful calligraphy. The innovative design reflects the spirit of modern Indonesian Islam. To sustain its daily operations, Masjid Jami Ar Ridwan relies on a productive waqf system, supplemented by financial assistance from neighboring businesses. A functional room available for rent further contributes to the mosque’s financial stability. Masjid Jami Ar Ridwan stands as a testament to the adaptability and resilience of faith, a beacon of unity in a diverse community. It reminds us that the essence of worship transcends architectural form.
