Gazing upon Masjid Jami’ An Nur, one can almost hear whispers of centuries past. Masjid Jami’ An Nur stands as a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of Jakarta. Located in the historic Pekojan district, also known as Kampung Arab, Masjid Jami’ An Nur has witnessed the ebb and flow of Jakarta’s history since 1760. It’s more than just a mosque; it’s a beacon of faith and a symbol of Arab civilization in Indonesia. Masjid Jami’ An Nur was founded by Sayid Abdullah bin Huseim Alaydrius, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, who hailed from Hadramaut, Yemen. His vision was to create a place of worship that would illuminate the community, hence the name “An Nur,” meaning “the light.” The mosque’s architecture reflects a blend of Arab, Betawi, and even Chinese influences. The original structure was much smaller, but expansions over the years, particularly in the 1800s and again with land donated in 1897, have allowed it to accommodate the growing community. Today, Masjid Jami’ An Nur can hold up to 1,000 worshippers within its 1,500 square meter prayer hall. Look closely at the mosque’s 33 pillars, each representing a bead on a tasbih, a Muslim prayer bead. The mimbar, a gift from the 18th-century Sultan of Pontianak, stands as a beautiful piece of history within the main prayer hall. Notice the unique minaret, resembling a lighthouse, rising towards the sky. During Indonesia’s struggle for independence, this very minaret served as a hiding place for freedom fighters, adding another layer of historical significance to Masjid Jami’ An Nur. It’s said that the direction of the qibla, the direction Muslims face during prayer, was miraculously altered by the revered scholar Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani. This event is still spoken of with awe and reverence, highlighting the mosque’s spiritual importance. Masjid Jami’ An Nur is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to faith, history, and the enduring spirit of the community it serves.
