Within these ancient walls whispers the legacy of Syekh Nawawi. Masjid Jami An-Nawawi stands before you a testament to faith and perseverance. This mosque in Tanara Serang Banten is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living link to a revered scholar.

Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani a prominent figure of the 19th century. He was born in 1813. He established this mosque alongside his home and pesantren a religious school. He dedicated his life to spreading Islam. He faced intimidation from the Dutch colonial government. This forced him to eventually leave for Mecca. There he became an Imam at the Masjidil Haram. He also authored over 115 books on Islamic studies. Even after his death in 1897 his influence resonated throughout Indonesia.

The Masjid Jami An-Nawawi itself has an unclear construction date. However based on Syekh Nawawi’s birth year it was likely built sometime between the 1840s and 1860s. The mosque’s construction reflects a blend of traditional Javanese architecture and Islamic design. It’s a quiet reminder of a time when faith was a powerful force in the face of adversity.

After Syekh Nawawi’s departure his nephew Kyai Arsyad Gasir oversaw the mosque and pesantren. He initiated the first renovation. This involved replacing older materials with brick and cement. Four pillars supporting the mosque were built during his leadership. These symbolize the four close companions of the Prophet Muhammad. Legend says Kyai Arsyad fasted for 40 days before erecting them.

Sadly the original well used for ablutions is no longer there. However a small pond near the mihrab the prayer niche remains. This too is associated with Kyai Arsyad’s time. It’s a small but meaningful detail that speaks volumes about the mosque’s enduring history. The mosque’s location far from urban centers presents a unique challenge. Getting there requires some effort a testament to its secluded history. Yet its isolated setting lends an aura of serenity. It’s a place of quiet reflection. A place to contemplate the life and legacy of a remarkable scholar. A place where the spirit of Syekh Nawawi continues to live on. The Masjid Jami An-Nawawi is a place to pause. It’s a place to feel the echoes of a past rich in faith and learning.
