“Since the 16th century?” That’s what Mpok Tini asked when people doubted the age of Masjid Jami Al Khairat. Welcome to a journey through time at Masjid Jami Al Khairat. It is a historic mosque nestled in Condet, East Jakarta. This mosque stands as Jakarta Timur’s oldest. Its existence dates back to the 16th century.

Once a small langgar, or prayer house, Masjid Jami Al Khairat has transformed into a grand mosque. It now accommodates thousands of worshipers. The walls adorned in green and white, give a peaceful ambiance. This invites all to reflect and pray.

Mpok Tini, a caretaker and fourth-generation descendant of the founders, shares the mosque’s story. Dato’ Kudul and Dato’ Dji’in, two Betawi brothers from Condet, founded it. They donated their land to build a simple wooden structure. This served as a place of worship. It was originally called Masjid Hutan Condet.

Over the centuries, Masjid Jami Al Khairat has undergone several renovations. These occurred in 1936, 1952, 1967 and 1988. These renovations have shaped its present-day appearance. The exterior and interior walls feature green and white marble-accented ceramics. A large dome and a minaret crown the mosque.

Inside, red carpets cover the main prayer area. Large hanging lamps illuminate the space. Fans provide a cool breeze. This creates a comfortable atmosphere for prayer. The mosque can accommodate over 2,000 worshipers.

Near the mosque lies a cemetery for the founding family. Dato’ Kudul and Dato’ Dji’in rest here. This symbolizes their lasting legacy.

Masjid Jami Al Khairat remains a vibrant center for Islamic practices. Friday prayers are held regularly. There are also recitations for men every Friday night and Saturday after dawn. The mosque hosts celebrations for important Islamic holidays. These include Maulid Nabi Muhammad and Isra Mi’raj. It also holds fast-breaking events during Ramadan.

Mpok Tini hopes that Masjid Jami Al Khairat will be preserved. She wants future generations to know about this mosque. It was built in Condet by Betawi people in the 16th century.

As you stand here, imagine the countless prayers offered within these walls. Picture the community gatherings and the echoes of history. Masjid Jami Al Khairat is more than a building. It is a living testament to faith, community, and the enduring spirit of Jakarta. It stands as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Condet. It is a legacy passed down through generations.
