“A mosque built on whispers and dreams,” a wise elder once murmured, “that’s Masjid Jami Al-Istiqomah.” Masjid Jami Al-Istiqomah stands as a testament to faith and community. It’s located in Cakung, East Jakarta, at RW2R+MC8, Komplek Penggilingan Elok, Jalan Terentang Elok. Another Masjid Jami Al-Istiqomah, sometimes referred to as Masjid Jami’ Al-Istiqomah (NU), is located in West Jakarta at Jl. Mandala Utara No.23 B. This often leads to confusion, but we’re talking about the one in Cakung. One story places another Masjid Jami Al-Istiqomah in Depok, claiming it was built in 1848. This mosque served as a resting and worship place for traveling merchants. Eventually, Syech Haji Djasim donated 1,020 (units unspecified) of land for the mosque’s construction. While the details might point to different locations, the spirit of community and faith remains constant across these stories. The Masjid Jami Al-Istiqomah we stand before, however, is described as relatively new. It’s a two-story structure with a modern minimalist style. The architecture features simple, cubistic geometric shapes, accented by a Middle Eastern-inspired dome. The tall windows have trimmed arch-patterned tops, hinting at Andalusian influences. The first floor serves as the main prayer room. The second floor, a mezzanine, provides additional prayer space. The main prayer room, a square of about 120 square meters, along with the 100 square meter second floor, can hold roughly 450 worshippers. Additional capacity comes from the side terraces and tiled areas, accommodating another 100 people. The mihrab, located in the center, is a rectangular area measuring 4×8 meters. It features a central cavity shaped like a door with a trimmed arch, echoing the window and door designs. The cavity is ornately decorated with floral motifs and blue Islamic stars, matching the exterior decorations.
