Before Masjid Jami Al-Falah stood tall a bustling marketplace thrived. It was known as Pasar Sawo a haven for traders journeying from distant villages. This humble marketplace served as a vital resting point for merchants traveling between Jati Bening and Pondok Kelapa before reaching Pasar Klender.
Masjid Jami Al-Falah wasn’t always the magnificent structure we see today. Its origins trace back to a small musala a simple prayer house within the heart of Pasar Sawo. This unassuming musala played a significant role in the lives of the local community.
But the story of Masjid Jami Al-Falah is marked by tragedy. During the 1960s the musala became a target of the PKI. In a horrific act of violence the musala was set ablaze while worshippers prayed inside. This devastating event tragically claimed two innocent lives.
The resilience of the community shone through this darkness. In 1973 after years of rebuilding and unwavering faith Masjid Jami Al-Falah was erected. It stands as a testament to the community’s strength and devotion a beacon of hope rising from the ashes of the past. This mosque with its towering minaret became a symbol of pride for the people of Duren Sawit.
The present Masjid Jami Al-Falah covers an impressive 2000 square meters. The main building itself spans 1500 square meters. As a mark of respect for its history sawo trees stand proudly in the front courtyard a poignant reminder of Pasar Sawo’s legacy.
Today Masjid Jami Al-Falah holds a special place as the oldest mosque in Duren Sawit. It continues to serve its community. It’s located on Jalan Swadaya Raya Number 1 in East Jakarta. The mosque is currently undergoing renovations. This is to enhance its beauty and modernize its design. It’s interesting to note that Masjid Jami Al-Falah was even selected as a filming location for the television show Damai Indonesiaku.
Masjid Jami Al-Falah isn’t merely a place of worship. It represents the unwavering spirit of a community. It’s a story of loss resilience and enduring faith. It is a vital part of the rich tapestry of Jakarta’s history.
