Masjid Jami’ Al Barkah stands proudly in Kemang Bangka South Jakarta. Founded in 1818 by Guru Sinin a revered figure believed to be a wali from Banten its history is deeply intertwined with the area’s development. Imagine the challenges Guru Sinin faced building this mosque on swampy land over a century ago. It required not only immense faith but also navigating the complexities of obtaining permits from the Dutch colonial government.
Early construction materials were humble. Leaves of rumbia and coconut tree trunks formed the initial structure. The mosque’s pillars were crafted from coconut wood its roof thatched with rumbia leaves. This humble beginning is a powerful reminder of the devotion that laid the foundation for this sacred space. The mosque’s evolution over time is fascinating. Subsequent renovations in 1932 1935 1950 1960 1970 and 1985 gradually transformed it. Wooden planks replaced the original materials and eventually ceramic tiles and eternit roofing were added mirroring the architectural styles of other mosques of the time.
