Nestled in the heart of Penang Island, Malaysia, stands the Masjid Jamek Kampung Rawa. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Rawa community. Masjid Jamek Kampung Rawa whispers tales of a rich history. The name “Rawa” itself comes from the Rawa (Rao) people, a Muslim community who practiced the Rao traditions. They journeyed from the Melaka Sultanate, drawn by the promise of trade, especially in religious texts. They settled in Penang, intermarrying with locals and establishing Kampung Rawa along the Sungai Pinang river. The story of Masjid Jamek Kampung Rawa begins humbly in 1952. A small surau was built on land owned by the Penang City Council. It served the predominantly Muslim workforce of the council. As the workforce grew, a madrasah was built. It provided additional space for the growing congregation. However, progress sometimes comes at a cost. Around the 1960s, the madrasah was demolished to make way for council housing. A new madrasah rose in Kampung Rawa, also on council land. This madrasah became the foundation for the present Masjid Jamek Kampung Rawa. In 1995, thanks to generous donations, the madrasah was expanded into a mosque. The land was then dedicated as a waqf, a charitable endowment. The design was envisioned by a Public Works Department (JKR) engineer. The mosque was named Masjid Kampung Rawa after the area. It became a hub of religious activities and learning. In October 2002, the Department of Islamic Religious Affairs Penang officially renamed it Masjid Jamek Kampung Rawa. En Yatim Ahmad, then chairman, formed a congregational committee. The mosque saw further upgrades in 2017, a collaborative effort by various government bodies. The project concluded in March 2020. The renovated mosque now accommodates up to 1096 worshippers. Masjid Jamek Kampung Rawa is crowned by a single, elegant dome, shaped like an egg curve (al-Ihliji). Its geometric decorative patterns and bright spaces create a serene atmosphere. This architectural gem stands proudly in Kampung Rawa, a symbol of faith and community. Masjid Jamek Kampung Rawa also holds a more turbulent memory. In March 1998, it was the starting point of a clash between Muslims and Hindus. This event, known as the Kampung Rawa incident, involved a confrontation at the nearby Sri Raja Raja Madurai Veeran shrine. The situation was eventually calmed through the intervention of the then Deputy Prime Minister, Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of interfaith understanding and harmony.
