Imagine a small surau in 1952. It was a humble prayer space for Malay Regiment soldiers. Muslim workers in Wessex Estate also used it. This was the beginning of Masjid Hang Jebat.

Masjid Hang Jebat stands as one of Singapore’s few old kampung mosques. It offers a glimpse into the past. The mosque got its name from nearby Hang Jebat military installation. This installation honored Hang Jebat. He was a legendary Malaccan warrior.

In 1971, the British withdrew. The land opened up. Donations came in. People wanted to expand the surau. In 1973, it officially became a mosque.

Today, Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura manages Masjid Hang Jebat. Despite minor upgrades, it retains its kampung charm. The mosque plays a vital social role. It provides counselling and religious services. It also offers tuition classes.

The mosque once stood close to the KTM railway tracks. This made it an iconic landmark. Masjid Hang Jebat is part of the Queenstown Heritage Trail.

Masjid Hang Jebat can accommodate 600 worshippers. The prayer hall is spacious. Large windows fill the hall with light. The architecture is traditional. It reflects Singapore’s Malay heritage.

Weekend madrasah classes take place here. Students from the Queenstown area attend. Zikir sessions fill the mosque with praises to Allah.

Getting here is easy. You can take the MRT to Queenstown station. Bus route 191 also provides direct access. Masjid Hang Jebat is located at 100 Jalan Hang Jebat.
