Masjid Guru Amin stands proudly in Jakarta. It’s named after KH R Muhammad Amin. He was a revered ulama a scholar of Islam and a courageous freedom fighter. His life was intertwined with the very fabric of this city.

Born in 1901 Guru Amin’s journey began in Kebayoran Lama. He learned from his father KH Raden Muhammad Ali. After his father’s passing he continued his studies. He eventually led prayers at the Masjid Salafiyah Kalibata Pulo. He also studied under other prominent teachers. He was a well-respected figure in his community.

But Guru Amin was more than just a scholar. He was a warrior. He led his students and fellow young people against the Dutch colonial forces. He fought fiercely in Kalibata near the present-day Bata shoe factory. Then it was a rubber plantation. These battles were pivotal in the struggle for Indonesian independence.

His bravery didn’t stop there. He became a member of the KNIP the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly. He also served on the committee preparing for the Proclamation of Independence. He was a prominent member of Nahdlatul Ulama and Partai Masyumi. He was instrumental in establishing religious offices across Jakarta Bekasi Tangerang and Karawang.

His legacy extends beyond the battlefield and the halls of power. He left a profound mark on the religious landscape of the region. The mosque we stand before today is a monument to his dedication. It’s where he spent countless hours teaching and praying guiding his community toward spiritual enlightenment.

Guru Amin’s influence was widespread. Even after his passing in 1965 his impact remains palpable. His name now graces a major road. The road’s renaming was an official recognition of his contribution. His family was present at the ceremony. Former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan attended as well as the city’s Secretary.
