“Youth Centre.” That’s what Gelanggang Remaja Jakarta Selatan was once known as. It stands as Jakarta’s first youth center.
Gelanggang Remaja Jakarta Selatan began its journey on April 16, 1970. Governor Ali Sadikin officially opened it. He envisioned a hub. It would foster sports and arts among young people.
Back in 1969, Jakarta Selatan faced challenges. Gangster activity was rife. Ali Sadikin sought a solution. He wanted to channel youthful energy positively.
The construction of Gelanggang Remaja Jakarta Selatan started on June 25, 1969. It was located on Jalan Bulungan. The center quickly became known as Bulungan.
The Gelanggang Remaja Jakarta Selatan complex included several facilities. There was a general activities unit. A sports building was also there. A swimming pool completed the offerings.
Governor Ali Sadikin aimed high. He wanted young people to lead in arts, culture, and sports. Workshops, auditoriums, stages, and libraries were incorporated. Gelanggang Remaja Jakarta Selatan became a supplementary education center. It complemented home and school learning.
The goal was clear. Culture in all its forms should flourish. Jakarta’s youth would have ample opportunities.
Gelanggang Remaja Jakarta Selatan collaborated with various institutions. This boosted activities and development. Many talented artists and athletes emerged. Some even achieved national sports week titles. The center hosted numerous school, college, and public competitions.
Recognizing its positive impact, more youth centers appeared. These sprung up across Jakarta’s sub-districts. Some evolved from existing sports arenas and community halls.
Even Ratu Elizabeth II visited Gelanggang Remaja Jakarta Selatan in 1974. Governor Ali Sadikin showcased local talent. Dances, theater, and art displays captivated her.
Toto Prawoto found a creative home at Gelanggang Remaja Jakarta Selatan. He arrived in Jakarta from Banjarnegara in the early 1970s. He connected with fellow artists. They honed their skills together.
In 2018, the venue even hosted volleyball matches. This coincided with the Asian Games.
Today, Gelanggang Remaja Jakarta Selatan continues its mission. It nurtures young talents. It provides avenues for sports and artistic expression. The spirit of youth thrives within its walls. It ensures its enduring legacy.
