The foundation stone was laid in 1961. Construction lasted 17 years. President Suharto opened Istiqlal in 1978. Istiqlal has seven entrances. They are named after Allah’s names. The seven gates symbolize the Seven Heavens. Ablution fountains are on the ground floor. The prayer hall is on the first floor.
Istiqlal’s main prayer hall features a 45-meter dome. The number represents Indonesia’s 1945 independence declaration. Twelve columns support the dome. They signify the Prophet Muhammad’s birth date.
The main floor and four balconies represent the Five Pillars of Islam. They also stand for Pancasila. The interior design is minimalist. Stainless steel geometric ornaments adorn the space. A tunnel connects Istiqlal Mosque to St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral. It is called the Tunnel of Friendship. It symbolizes religious tolerance.
Istiqlal’s minaret is 66.66 meters tall. It symbolizes the Quran’s verses. A 30-meter pinnacle tops the minaret. It represents the Quran’s 30 juz. Some Indonesian Muslims found Istiqlal’s design too modern. They preferred Javanese triple-roofed designs.
