In 1942 KH Abdul Manaf Mukhayyar established Madrasah Al-Islamiyah. This was the seed of Masjid Darunnajah. Its humble beginnings were in Petunduhan Palmerah. However in 1959 the land was taken for the Asian Games sports complex. Undeterred KH Manaf sought a new location. He found it in Ulujami.
Masjid Darunnajah’s story is one of perseverance. In 1960 the Yayasan Kesejahteraan Masyarakat Islam (YKMI) was founded. Its goal was to build a pesantren on the Ulujami land. This marked the start of Masjid Darunnajah’s journey.
The early years were challenging. Construction started in 1961. A six-classroom madrasah was built. The initial madrasah education took place in Petukangan. This was due to various obstacles. A small group of students were taught there. Even then Masjid Darunnajah was growing. By 1964 a primary school and kindergarten were added.
Despite setbacks Masjid Darunnajah thrived. In 1974 the pesantren finally opened in Ulujami. It started with just three students. The first building was a small mosque. It measured just 11 by 11 meters. Yet it represented a significant step forward. The mosque and some dormitories were built. The santri helped with construction.
Masjid Darunnajah continued to develop. The 1980s saw expansion. Its mission broadened to include education and community outreach. The aim was to establish many modern Islamic schools. By 2004 the Darunnajah group had 41 branches.
In 1994 the land was rededicated as a waqf. This was a significant event for Masjid Darunnajah. The founders reaffirmed their commitment. The rededication brought together ulama and community leaders. It solidified the mosque’s foundation. By 2011 Darunnajah had 14 branches. Its growth continued.
Today Masjid Darunnajah stands as a testament to KH Manaf’s vision. It is a vibrant center for Islamic education and community. Its enduring legacy continues to inspire generations. Masjid Darunnajah is more than a mosque it is a symbol of faith hope and perseverance. It’s a place where learning and community intertwine.
