“A mosque built for just over a hundred souls?” you might ask. Right here, before the Masjid Darul Makmur in Yishun, Singapore, that’s exactly how the story began. In the early 1980s, Yishun’s Muslim community numbered just 102. Yet, they envisioned a place of worship, a beacon of faith for their growing community. Masjid Darul Makmur stands as a testament to their vision. Its history is one of community spirit, perseverance, and faith. It serves as a beautiful reminder that even small beginnings can lead to grand outcomes. The mosque, officially opened on July 25, 1987, became a reality through the tireless efforts of the Mosque Building Committee. These dedicated individuals organized various fundraising initiatives. They held religious talks, established monthly contributions, and even hosted a jog-a-walk. They appealed to individuals, organizations, and companies for support. Donation boxes were placed in other mosques around Singapore, gathering contributions during Friday prayers. Even the compensation received from the acquisition of smaller prayer spaces, known as suraus, in nearby villages contributed to the building fund. Interestingly, the name “Darul Makmur” wasn’t the first choice. Several other names were suggested, including Al-Jannah, Al-Makmur, Assobirin, Faisah, Al-Bilal, Al-Muaasim, Aminin, Al-Syuhadah, and Al-Araf. The Fatwa Committee ultimately chose “Darul Makmur”. The first congregational prayer held at the newly completed mosque was Eiduladha Prayers in 1407H. Today, Masjid Darul Makmur serves the Muslim families of Yishun and the northern part of Singapore. It’s more than just a place of worship. It is a center of learning, housing a kindergarten and a Tahfiz course for children learning Quran memorization. This bustling hub accommodates around 3,000 people, a far cry from the 102 souls it was initially intended for. As of April 24, 2023, Masjid Darul Makmur is undergoing major renovations. It is expected to reopen in late 2025, boasting expanded facilities and improved accessibility. Masjid Darul Makmur is a symbol of community, faith, and growth. It reflects the spirit of a small community that dared to dream big. Their story, etched into the very foundation of this mosque, continues to inspire.
