Masjid Darul Islam is more than bricks and mortar. It is a testament to faith, community and perseverance. Though its history may not be as widely known as some of Jakarta’s grander mosques like Istiqlal Mosque, its role in the local community is undeniable.
Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque stands as Southeast Asia’s largest mosque. Istiqlal means independence in Arabic. It was built to commemorate Indonesian independence. This grand mosque can accommodate over 120000 people. Its construction took 17 years. President Suharto inaugurated Istiqlal Mosque in 1978.
Istiqlal Mosque has seven gates. These gates are named after Al-Asmaul-Husna. This refers to the names of God in Islam. The number seven represents the Seven Heavens in Islamic cosmology. The mosque’s design is the work of Frederich Silaban. He was a Christian architect.
Inside Istiqlal Mosque, a 45-meter diameter dome covers the main prayer hall. The number 45 symbolizes the year of Indonesian independence, 1945. A single minaret stands to symbolize the divine oneness of God.
Istiqlal Mosque faced challenges. There was a bombing in 1978 and another in 1999. Despite these events, it remains a symbol of Indonesian resilience.
The Jakarta Islamic Centre is also a significant place. It handles religious and cultural studies. It extends over 110000 square meters. Its mosque can accommodate up to 20000 worshipers.
Jakarta Islamic Centre has educational and commercial facilities. There is a large hall for Islamic conferences. A hotel provides guest accommodation. The center also has a training area and an exhibition hall.
