Here stands a testament to faith and community. This is the Masjid Daing Abdul Rahman. It leads the way in modern mosque design. But its story starts humbly.
In early 2010, the community of Nusa Idaman used a shop lot as a surau. They needed a proper place for worship. By the end of that year, they had collected RM36,000. This allowed them to build the Surau Nusa Idaman. It was to be on the current mosque site.
By 2012 Surau Nusa Idaman was allowed to hold Friday prayers. The Bukit Indah Mosque was too crowded. The community needed more space.
The plan to upgrade Surau Nusa Idaman to a mosque continued in 2017. They had collected RM1.2 million. A donor gave them more funds. Construction took two years. In 2019, the mosque was finally completed. It was named Masjid Daing Abdul Rahman, Iskandar Puteri.
A delegation from JAINJ visited the Masjid Daing Abdul Rahman on March 4, 2019. Dato’ Mufti Johor and his Deputy led the delegation. They assessed the mosque. They awarded accreditation for Friday Prayers.
Razin Architects designed the Masjid Daing Abdul Rahman. In 2010, they built the smaller surau. It was for 200 people. The design won awards. It was a modest prayer hall. Wide overhangs and brick walls made it naturally ventilated. This led to the commission for the larger mosque.
The mosque committee wanted it to be like the surau. They wanted it to be simple. It also had to be a showpiece. They desired a proper mosque. They wanted it completed with a small budget and simple details.
The Masjid Daing Abdul Rahman is a three-story cube. It uses glass, brick, and steel. The highlight is a screen of galvanized steel panels. These panels have a triangular design. It is inspired by leaves. It modernizes traditional Islamic motifs. The design is also functional.
The main prayer hall has clear glass on three sides. This meant it needed shading. Cost and maintenance were important. They considered glass reinforced concrete and perforated aluminum. Solid galvanized panels were chosen. They are robust and perform well.
The architects knew the panels would fade over time. This fit with their idea of simplicity and practicality.
Masjid Daing Abdul Rahman also has facilities for many activities. These include a “Ruang Nikah”. They also have facilities for Qurban. There is a visitor-friendly Iktikaf space. There is an office and a library. Sports equipment is available. Carom, ping pong, and archery are provided. There is plenty of parking space too.
The Masjid Daing Abdul Rahman welcomes everyone. It is a place for prayer. It is a place for community. It is a place for activities. It stands as a beacon of faith and modernity in Nusa Idaman.
