The midday sun beats down on Masjid Baiturahim. Its white walls gleam.

Masjid Baiturahim stands proudly in Jakarta Indonesia. It’s a significant place of worship. Its history is interwoven with that of the Indonesian presidency.

Originally a tennis court. Masjid Baiturahim was built during President Soekarno’s era. Between 1959 and 1961. A unique feature. Its orientation doesn’t align perfectly with the Qibla. This was a conscious decision. President Soekarno wanted the mosque’s architecture to be symmetrical with the Merdeka Palace. Religious scholars. Including the father of Habib Abdurrahman Al-Habsyi and KH Sidiq Fauzi consulted on this. They agreed on a compromise. Congregants would pray slightly angled to the right. Ensuring alignment with the Qibla.

Later under President Soeharto. Religious activities flourished. In 1997. The south side of Masjid Baiturahim was expanded. Increasing its capacity to 750 worshippers. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono oversaw further renovations. In 2010 the Imam Besar of Masjidil Haram even led Friday prayers at the mosque’s re-opening.

Today Masjid Baiturahim thrives. Serving government employees and the wider community. Friday prayers are well attended. Often including the President Vice President and ministers. Security is tight but respectful. Cell phones are stored before prayer ensuring a peaceful atmosphere. The mosque’s schedule for Friday Imams and Khutbah speakers involves people from religious academic and bureaucratic backgrounds. During Ramadan Masjid Baiturahim opens its doors to the public. For Tarawih prayers and breaking the fast.

Masjid Baiturahim is more than a place of worship. It is a symbol of faith and unity. It’s a living testament to Indonesia’s rich history and its dedication to religious harmony. Its story is one of adaptation compromise and continuous growth mirroring the dynamic spirit of Jakarta itself. A place where prayer echoes. Peace prevails. And history lives on.
