Picture this. You stand before Masjid Baitur Rahman in Jakarta. Its unique shape unlike any other in Indonesia catches your eye. It resembles a Tanjung flower a design inspired by a trip to the Philippines.

Masjid Baitur Rahman is nestled within the bustling complex of the MPR/DPR in Senayan Jakarta. It’s a place of tranquility amidst the chaos of Indonesian politics. Built between 1993 and 1997 it stands slightly elevated from surrounding buildings. This makes it prominent even though it is smaller than many nearby structures.

The mosque’s design is geometric with bold pointed lines. A vibrant green hue covers the entire building. The octagonal dome is striking with sharply angled lines. A pendopo a covered veranda acts as a transition space before entering the mosque. A short staircase leads to a terrace. From there you see beautiful teak wood carvings depicting foliage adorning the main entrance.

Next to the terrace you’ll notice a large bedug a traditional Indonesian drum. Made of wood from Blora forest and covered in Australian cowhide it measures 1.97 meters in diameter and 3 meters long.

Inside the mosque the space feels open despite its size. Only two wooden support pillars are present. Ornate decorations abound many echoing the Tanjung flower motif. A unique chandelier in the shape of a Tanjung flower hangs below the dome. The mimbar the pulpit is simple and minimalist covering half a white wall. The main prayer hall has two levels. The upper level provides space for women.

Baitur Rahman means house of mercy. It symbolizes a place of comfort and divine compassion. A truly memorable place of worship.
