The rhythmic call to prayer echoes. It’s a familiar sound here at Masjid Raya Baitul Ma’mur. This is more than just a mosque. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and community.
Masjid Raya Baitul Ma’mur stands tall. It’s a place of worship in the heart of Jakarta. Its story begins long before its current form. It started as a small mushalla. This modest house of prayer stood 500 meters from its present location. It was built by Bapak Jaba and his neighbors during the Dutch colonial era. Time and neglect threatened this early structure.
In 1963 the community decided to act. H Amat H Amit and H Miat led the effort. They moved the old mushalla. They rebuilt it on H Miat’s land. The new mosque was small just 100 square meters. It was made of red bricks with bamboo walls. They named it Masjid Jami Al-Falah.
Growth demanded expansion. In 1970 the mosque was relocated westward. This time a more substantial structure was planned. It was to be made of bricks and cover 1000 square meters. H Miat generously donated the land. However the project stalled. The construction wasn’t finished until much later.
A significant shift occurred in 1974. Madrasah Al-Hidayah a primary school next to the mosque was separated. It was managed independently by H Amit’s family. The mosque itself continued its development journey.
Finally in 1979 the Jakarta Regional Government stepped in. Governor Tjokropranolo oversaw the completion of the building. The mosque was officially inaugurated. More importantly its name changed to Masjid Baitul Ma’mur. Ustadz H Ahmad Suhaimi became its first chairman.
The mosque’s journey didn’t end there. In 2002 it was demolished. Usable materials were donated to other mosques. The Jakarta Regional Government rebuilt Masjid Raya Baitul Ma’mur. This time on a much larger 2140 square meter plot. It was completed in December 2004. The community then decided on a new name: Masjid Raya Baitul Ma’mur.
The mosque’s land holds a fascinating story. 1000 square meters were a waqf donation from H Miat bin H Buang. The rest was acquired through land acquisition efforts led by H A Rachmat bin H Miat.
