Hidden within Jakarta’s bustling Pasar Minggu district, Masjid Baitul Akbar stands as a unique testament to faith and security. Masjid Baitul Akbar isn’t just any mosque. It’s nestled within the complex of the Badan Intelijen Negara (BIN), Indonesia’s intelligence agency. This gives it a distinct atmosphere, a blend of serenity and watchful vigilance. My visit to Masjid Baitul Akbar in 2019 began with a short bike ride from Pasar Minggu Baru Station. As I approached the mosque, I was struck by the presence of guards armed with rifles, adding a layer of intensity to the experience. I was asked to leave my bag in a locker, a subtle reminder of the mosque’s sensitive location. Even taking photos felt clandestine, though I couldn’t resist capturing the beauty of this red and white structure, reminiscent of Indonesia’s national colors. The architecture of Masjid Baitul Akbar is a fascinating mix of Middle Eastern and modern influences. The golden domes and minarets evoke traditional Islamic design, while the geometric, cubist shapes and prominent pentagonal doorways lend a contemporary feel. Inside, the mosque is equally captivating. The prayer hall is dominated by a red marble altar, adorned with ornate arrowhead-shaped designs. Above the altar, calligraphy spells out the names of Allah and Prophet Muhammad. The mihrab, the niche indicating the direction of Mecca, is also shaped like an arrowhead, framed by black marble and golden Islamic star patterns. The ceiling features a breathtaking painting of a blue sky with clouds, centered around a golden calligraphy of Allah. Seventeen lamps hang from the center, casting a warm glow over the space. Masjid Baitul Akbar is a double-story mosque, capable of accommodating up to 1,500 worshippers. During my visit, I witnessed the mosque slowly fill with worshippers, many of whom appeared to be BIN employees in batik uniforms. The khotbah, or sermon, delivered by Ustadz DR H. Abdul Aziz Ritonga, focused on the upcoming month of Ramadan and offered guidance on preparing both spiritually and physically for the holy month. The blend of spiritual reflection and the ever-present security detail made for a memorable experience. Leaving Masjid Baitul Akbar, I felt a sense of peace, intertwined with the intrigue of having prayed in a place where faith and national security intersect.
