The majestic dome of Masjid Agung Al-Azhar beckons. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s a Jakarta landmark.

Masjid Agung Al-Azhar is more than just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of Jakarta’s rich Islamic heritage. Built between 1953 and 1958 it was once the city’s largest mosque. That is until the Istiqlal Mosque was completed in 1978.

Its story begins with fourteen individuals from the Masyumi Party. They envisioned a mosque and school in Kebayoran Baru. Syamsudin the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs supported their vision. They founded the Islamic Dormitory School Foundation. The Ministry of Religious Affairs provided funds. Jakarta’s mayor donated four hectares of land.

Hamka a prominent ulama and activist played a crucial role. He advised building the mosque first. He suggested incorporating office space and meeting rooms. This allowed for activities even while the school was under construction.

Construction began on November 19 1953. The mosque was completed in 1958. It was inaugurated as Masjid Agung Kebayoran. Then Grand Imam Mahmud Shaltut of Al-Azhar visited Jakarta in 1960. He suggested renaming it Masjid Agung Al-Azhar. He also appointed Hamka as the Chief Imam.

For Hamka this role reflected his concern for Islam in Indonesia. He believed Muslims needed more knowledge. The mosque became a center for Islamic revival and the propagation of faith. During the 1965-1966 crisis it became a center for anti-communist campaigns among Muslims. A kindergarten was added in 1967. Later the nearby Al-Azhar University Indonesia was established in 2000.

The mosque’s Middle Eastern-style architecture is striking. The white onion dome is iconic. It has a single minaret. Masjid Agung Al-Azhar wasn’t just a place of prayer. It was designed as a center for social activities. It included modern facilities a library lecture hall clinic classrooms and dormitories. It pioneered a modern approach to mosque design in Indonesia. In 1993 it was designated a Jakarta heritage site and a national cultural heritage. Masjid Agung Al-Azhar stands as a powerful symbol of faith education and community. It’s a place where history resonates with the present. It’s a must-see in Jakarta.
