A soaring roof greets you. This is Masjid At Taufiq a testament to faith and remembrance. Located in Lenteng Agung South Jakarta this mosque stands as a tribute to the late Taufiq Kiemas. The idea for Masjid At Taufiq originated with Megawati Soekarnoputri. She wanted a place of worship for the predominantly Muslim members of the PDI Perjuangan party school. This school once occupied the very spot where Masjid At Taufiq now stands. Her daughter Puan Maharani spearheaded the project fulfilling her mother’s vision.
Construction began in December 2018. It was completed in July 2020. The official opening however was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. President Joko Widodo himself attended the grand opening ceremony. Many other important figures were also present. The mosque was built on 1800 square meters of land. It can comfortably accommodate 400 to 500 worshippers.
Masjid At Taufiq’s design is uniquely Indonesian. It showcases the ‘nusantara’ style. The tall roof is a signature element. Islamic ornaments adorn the facade reciting the 99 names of Allah. The interior is just as stunning. Filigree ornaments enhance the beauty of the prayer hall while functioning as natural ventilation. Skylights provide ample natural lighting. The mihrab a focal point in the prayer hall is made of solid black material evoking the Black Stone in the Kaaba. The mosque’s exterior is illuminated at night creating captivating patterns of light and shadow.
The mosque’s design reflects the Hablum Minannas Hablum Minallah philosophy. The first floor caters to human interaction. It houses an ablution area toilets an auditorium and a management room. The auditorium is versatile. It’s used for parties weddings seminars and interfaith discussions. During peak times like Friday prayers or Eid prayers the first floor can even expand the prayer area. The second floor dedicated to prayer embodies the connection between humanity and God. Its towering roof symbolizes the greatness of the Creator.
Masjid At Taufiq is more than just a place of worship. It serves as a community hub. Megawati envisioned it as a space for social activities. Activities that promote the Indonesian spirit and the values of Pancasila. The mosque’s blend of Minangkabau influences and modern architecture is captivating. It shows how tradition can complement modern design. Masjid At Taufiq stands as a beacon of faith community and cultural heritage. It’s a place where spiritual devotion and social engagement intertwine creating a vibrant heart in Lenteng Agung.
