“Lost in prayer?” a soft voice inquired, pulling me back to the present. We stood before Masjid Asy Syuhadaa in Jagakarsa, Jakarta Selatan. The name itself, Asy Syuhadaa, resonated with a powerful meaning: “martyrs in the path of Allah.” This mosque, nestled on Jl. Tanjung Barat Selatan Gg Seratus, held a unique charm. Its cream and green hues stood out against the backdrop of the surrounding homes. Masjid Asy Syuhadaa’s architecture whispered tales of the Ottoman Empire. Five green domes crowned the structure. The central, dominant dome was surrounded by four smaller ones, perched at each corner. A sturdy minaret rose proudly beside the mosque, completing the picture. The arched doorways, painted in stripes reminiscent of Masjid Nabawi in Medina, further emphasized this Ottoman influence. The intricate, trapezoidal patterns of the roster added another layer of detail. Inside Masjid Asy Syuhadaa, a grand space unfolded. The main prayer hall on the first floor, encircled by a U-shaped veranda, covered approximately 400 square meters. A mezzanine level provided additional prayer space, also U-shaped, spanning around 300 square meters. The mosque could accommodate an estimated 1,500 worshippers. Green-hued carpets with specks and shaft lines covered the ceramic floors. The mihrab, set within a rectangular altar, featured a recessed center with curved edges, echoing the design of the entrance doors. The area beyond the curve was adorned with carved wood in a diamond pattern. Above, calligraphy proclaimed the names of Allah and Prophet Muhammad. The altar walls and the mihrab’s backdrop were clad in black ceramic tiles, a subtle nod to the Kaaba. Inside the mihrab, an antique clock, the imam’s prayer rug, and a mimbar stood. The mimbar, shaped like a miniature mosque, had a glass front displaying the kalimat tauhid. A digital LED clock above displayed prayer times and Islamic messages. A square void at the front of the mosque offered a glimpse of the dome’s inner curve, a focal point of the interior design. This 8-meter diameter curve was decorated with calligraphy in a floral pattern, a blend of green, blue, pink, brown, yellow, and white. The center held the name of Allah, surrounded by petals inscribed with Asma’ul Husna. Twenty-four stained-glass windows, alternating between the names of Allah and Prophet Muhammad, encircled the lower part of the dome. Beneath them, verses from the Quran were painted in white against a green background. A luxurious three-tiered crystal chandelier hung from the center, completing the breathtaking display. Twelve stained-glass windows around the room were etched with gold calligraphy of Allah and Prophet Muhammad. Even the mundane details were carefully considered. The mosque was equipped with four split AC units and fifteen high-powered wall fans. Masjid Asy Syuhadaa was not just a place of worship; it was a work of art, a testament to faith and devotion.
