A beacon of faith amidst the industrial hum, Masjid Astra stands tall in Jakarta’s Sunter district. Masjid Astra isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a vibrant hub of knowledge and community. Established in 2000, Masjid Astra quickly became a cornerstone of the Astra industrial area. The mosque’s striking blue dome beckons worshippers and knowledge-seekers alike. Daily after Zhuhur and Ashar prayers, the mosque comes alive with the murmur of discussions and the rustle of pages. Employees from the nearby Astra factories, the largest motor and car industry area in Indonesia, flock to Masjid Astra for a moment of respite and spiritual reflection. Since 2001, Masjid Astra has hosted regular Islamic studies sessions. These sessions cater to everyone, from Astra employees seeking a deeper understanding of their faith to members of the public eager to learn. The regular attendees are often those workers from Astra, but those from the wider community often join as well. Muhammad Syarif, who oversees these gatherings, explains that the purpose is to enrich the mosque’s spiritual life and enhance the religious knowledge of Astra’s employees. Typically, around 100 people attend these sessions. Masjid Astra offers a diverse range of studies. Some sessions are specifically for Astra employees, while others are open to the public, and separate sessions for women. Each day features a different theme and a different speaker. Mondays focus on Tahsin, refining the recitation of the Quran, while Tuesdays delve into thematic Fiqh, Islamic jurisprudence. Wednesdays see the study of Riyadus Shalihin, a compilation of hadith. Thursdays are particularly busy, with both Tahsin sessions and discussions on Muslim ethics and conduct. Saturdays are dedicated to Quranic memorization and recitation. On the second Sunday of each month, Masjid Astra hosts a grand Tabligh Akbar, a large-scale religious gathering. These gatherings can draw crowds of up to 1,500 people, predominantly Astra employees. Even during these large events, the focus remains on enriching faith and fostering a sense of community. So, as you stand before Masjid Astra, remember, it’s more than just a building.
