The story of Masjid Assyafi’iyah is intertwined with the life of KH Abdullah Syafi’ie. He was born in Kampung Balimatraman in 1910. Abdullah Syafi’ie pursued knowledge from many teachers. These included Ustadz Marzuki, Habib Ali Al Habsyi and others. He even studied in Mecca.
Driven by his love for learning, Syafi’ie wanted to create a space for religious discussion. At just 17, he asked his father to sell his cattle. The cowshed was then transformed into a Madrasah. It was initially called Madrasah Islamiyah Ibtidaiyah. Decades later, it became As-Syafi’iyah.
In 1933, KH Abdullah Syafi’ie expanded his work. He bought land and made it a wakaf. This became the Masjid Al-Barkah. The mosque became known for its large congregations. People were drawn to KH Abdullah Syafi’ie’s captivating sermons.
Later, in 1954, he acquired more land near Masjid Al Barkah. His vision was to develop a secondary school. This vision materialized as Perguruan Islam As-Syafi’iyah. It included a pesantren for boys and girls. Madrasahs at all levels were available there. The institution thrived under his guidance.
KH. Abdullah Syafi’ie was also a founder of the Indonesian Ulema Council MUI. He served as Vice Chairman at the central level. He also acted as Chairman of the Jakarta MUI. He worked to eradicate illiteracy in the Quran. Despite limited formal education, he was trusted in religious organizations.
His courage earned him the nickname “Lion of the Podium.” Ulama Prof KH Ali Yafie described him as brave. He was sincere and tireless in his preaching. He firmly upheld Islamic values.
Before his death, he instructed his son to lead prayers. He passed away in his son’s arms. KH Abdullah Syafi’ie died on September 3, 1985.
