Fancy stepping back in time? Masjid Assalamah stands before us not just as a place of worship. It is a testament to Jakarta’s rich history. Founded in 1620 by Pangeran Jayakarta himself, Masjid Assalamah began as more than just a mosque. It was a strategic point for resistance.

Pangeran Jayakarta, a key figure in opposing Dutch colonial rule, built this Masjid Assalamah after a significant defeat. The story goes that after his forces were overwhelmed, he retreated eastward. He then established a new base in what is now Jatinegara Kaum. Here in Jatinegara Kaum he rallied local leaders and scholars. He prepared to continue the struggle against the Dutch.

Imagine this area back then. It was a dense forest where Pangeran Jayakarta sought refuge. This location provided a strategic advantage. It allowed him to gather his forces away from the prying eyes of the VOC.

Masjid Assalamah became the heart of this resistance. It served as a meeting point for planning strategies. It was a place to inspire the community. It united them against colonial oppression. Pangeran Jayakarta’s son, Pangeran Senapati, even extended this influence by spreading Islamic teachings further afield. He moved to Cibarusah in Bekasi. There he established another center of resistance.

Pangeran Jayakarta’s legacy is deeply intertwined with Masjid Assalamah. After his death in 1640, he was buried here. His final resting place is a reminder of his enduring impact on Jakarta. Today, the tomb is next to the Masjid Assalamah. It attracts many visitors who come to honor his memory. Even high-ranking officials pay their respects.

Over the centuries, Masjid Assalamah has undergone several renovations. But some original features remain. These preserved elements offer a tangible link to its storied past. Since 1993, Masjid Assalamah has been designated as a cultural heritage site. This designation protects its historical integrity. It ensures that future generations can appreciate its significance.

The name “Assalafiyah” itself carries deep meaning. It refers to the “pious predecessors” in Islamic history. These include the companions, the Tabi’in, and the Tabi’ut Tabi’in. These three generations are models for practicing Islamic law. “Yah” means followers. So “Assalafiyah” means followers of the pious predecessors.

Interestingly, the area around Masjid Assalamah is known as Jatinegara Kaum. The name “Jatinegara” means “true state”. This can be interpreted as a declaration that Jatinegara replaced Jayakarta. Jayakarta had been destroyed.

Consider the mosque’s structure. It covers 450 square meters on a 7,000 square meter site. It can accommodate up to 800 worshippers. The building reflects a blend of historical and cultural influences. This is evident in its architecture and design.

Masjid Assalamah continues to be an active center for the community. Especially during Ramadan, various activities are held here. These include Koranic studies, religious lectures, and communal iftars. It remains a vital part of the local community.

As you stand here, remember that you are not just visiting a mosque. You are experiencing a place that embodies the spirit of resistance. It is a symbol of cultural identity. It is a beacon of faith. Masjid Assalamah is more than just a historical site. It is a living testament to Jakarta’s vibrant past and enduring spirit.
