Slipping through Jakarta’s bustling streets, we find ourselves at Masjid Assa’addah. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. Masjid Assa’addah whispers tales of resilience and community. This seemingly unassuming mosque in the heart of Tanjung Priok holds a significant place in Indonesian history. It stands as a silent witness to a dark chapter, the Tanjung Priok riots of 1984. Masjid Assa’addah, then a smaller musala, became the unexpected spark that ignited the flames of unrest. It began with a seemingly minor incident. A Babinsa, Sergeant First Class Hermanu, entered the musala without removing his shoes. He tore down pamphlets he deemed offensive to the government, even going so far as to splash sewage water within the sacred space. This act, perceived as a grave disrespect, fueled simmering tensions between the local Muslim community and the authorities. Word spread quickly amongst the worshippers at Masjid Assa’addah. Two days later, a heated exchange erupted between residents, the Babinsa, and community leaders at the nearby Baitul Makmur Mosque. The situation escalated dramatically when someone set fire to the Babinsa’s motorcycle. The ensuing chaos led to the arrest of several community figures. This further inflamed the community surrounding Masjid Assa’addah, who demanded their release. On September 12th, tensions reached a boiling point. A protest march towards the Kodim was met with armed forces. The confrontation resulted in a tragic loss of life. While the official death toll remains disputed, the Tanjung Priok riots are undeniably a scar on Indonesia’s past. Masjid Assa’addah, though renovated, remains a poignant reminder of this turbulent period. It serves not only as a place of worship but as a living testament to the power of faith, the importance of respect, and the enduring spirit of a community. The mosque stands as a symbol of the struggle for justice and a beacon of hope for a more peaceful future.
