The construction of Masjid Annaafi’ began in 1760. Initially, it covered about 500 square meters. As the congregation grew the mosque expanded. By the late 18th to early 19th centuries it reached 2000 square meters. This expansion allowed it to accommodate between 1500 and 2000 people.
Masjid Annaafi’ earned its name from its founders. An-Nawier means “to shine”. It was intended to illuminate the area around it. The mosque quickly became a central gathering place. It became the largest in Kampung Arab Pekojan.
Each architectural element within Masjid Annaafi’ carries deep meaning. Five doors face the Qibla. They symbolize the five pillars of Islam. Six doors on the side represent the six pillars of faith. Thirty-three pillars mirror the beads of a tasbih. The building retains its historical integrity. Features like the ceilings pillars doors and teak roofs are preserved.
A unique story involves Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani. This respected cleric once adjusted the Qibla direction of Masjid Annaafi’. Originally facing directly west it was altered to the northwest. This change occurred after a miraculous event. Syekh Nawawi witnessed the Kaaba clearly visible from the mihrab. He then slightly angled the mihrab and the rows of worshippers to align correctly.
