Time marched on. Singapore developed rapidly. The 1980s brought massive redevelopment. The old Masjid Alkaff was surrounded by new housing. In November 1989 the mosque received a new name. Masjid Alkaff Kampung Melayu reflected its place within the evolving Kampung Melayu area.
The old mosque was demolished. A new Masjid Alkaff Kampung Melayu was needed. Groundbreaking for this new mosque started on January 4 1992. Two years later the new mosque was finished. It opened its doors for Friday prayers on December 31 1994. The official opening ceremony took place on July 29 1995. Zulkifli Mohammed then Political Secretary to a Minister presided over the ceremony.
This isn’t just any mosque. Masjid Alkaff Kampung Melayu cost S$5.6 million to build. It is a three-story building. It can hold 3000 worshippers. It’s more than a place of worship. It is a community center. It offers religious classes. It even provides classes for the hearing impaired and disabled. This makes it truly special in Singapore.
