“Pious people ever aware of God.” That’s the meaning behind the name Al-Muttaqin. It’s a fitting description for this beautiful mosque. We are standing before the Masjid Al Mutakin. The story of Masjid Al-Muttaqin begins in the late 1970s. Muslim residents of Ang Mo Kio desired a local mosque. Before its construction, worshippers traveled to Thomson Road. Others went to Kampong Sireh or Pheng Geck Avenue. This journey highlights the strong need for a local place of worship.
Driven by faith and unity, the community acted. They formed neighborhood committees. These committees fostered support and fellowship. During Ramadan, they organized communal meals at void decks. These gatherings strengthened community bonds. The breaking of fast together was a symbol of unity.
The community proposed building their own mosque. MUIS, the Islamic religious council, sponsored building costs. The community still had to raise funds. They sought donations and sold food at events. Their combined efforts showcased their commitment.
The groundbreaking ceremony occurred on April 29, 1979. Syed Ali Redha Alsagoff officiated the event. He was chairman of Lembaga Biasiswa Kenangan Maulud. This organization is also known as the PMBM Scholarship Fund Board.
Finally, on September 21, 1980, Masjid Al-Muttaqin opened its doors. Haji Rahmat Kenap, Member of Parliament for Geylang Serai, led the opening. This was a momentous occasion for the community. The mosque became a focal point for Muslims in Ang Mo Kio.
Masjid Al-Muttaqin is located in central Singapore. It serves residents of Ang Mo Kio. The mosque can accommodate up to 3,500 worshippers. It also provides religious classes. These include Madrasah, kindergarten, and Al-Quran programs. These programs promote learning and spiritual growth.
The mosque has undergone expansions. In 1987, a new floor was added. This housed kindergarten classes. A third level was added in 1998, along with renovations. The mosque was upgraded again in 2017. These improvements ensure modern facilities.
