Masjid Al Muqaromah stands proudly in Kampung Bandan Jakarta Utara. Its history stretches back centuries a silent observer of Jakarta’s transformation. This unassuming mosque holds within its walls a story far grander than its size suggests.
Two revered scholars Habib Mohammad Bin Umar Alqudsi and Habib Ali Bin Abdurrahman Ba’Alawi arrived from Yemen. They spread Islam’s teachings throughout the archipelago. Their journey took them from India to Aceh finally to Jakarta. They dedicated their lives to spreading their faith until their passing. Their final resting places lie here within Masjid Al Muqaromah.
Centuries later Habib Abdurrahman Bin Alwi Asy-Syathri built the original mosque in 1789. He erected it beside the tombs of his predecessors. This act of reverence cemented their legacy and created a site of pilgrimage. The mosque was later renamed Masjid Jami’ Al Mukarromah in 2006. Jami’ means congregation. Al Mukarromah means glorified by God a fitting tribute to the sacred space.
More than just a place of worship Masjid Al Muqaromah is a historical site. It’s a repository of stories. The mosque houses not only the tombs of these three influential figures but also others. Three unmarked graves belong to residents of Kampung Bandan. These were people from Banda in Maluku who were taken captive by the Dutch. They were brought to Jakarta during the VOC era. Their resting place here further intertwines the history of the mosque with the broader history of Jakarta.
Even the date palms have a story. Two mature trees stand near the mosque. One yields sweet dates every Ramadan. Pilgrims believe these dates can improve fertility. This belief adds a mystical element to the already profound spiritual significance of the mosque.
During Ramadan Masjid Al Muqaromah offers 80 to 100 takjil. This is a delightful pre-breaking-fast meal to pilgrims. People travel not only from Jakarta but from far beyond. They come to pay their respects to the great scholars buried within its walls.
